When young people who are disenchanted with politics go online to find out about current political events, they usually do so via YouTube. The first port of call is the YouTuber “LeFloid”. For several years now, this film has been entertaining audiences from young to old, although it should be noted that its target group is clearly the younger generation. But how did his career on YouTube begin, how did it develop, and who is actually behind “LeFloid”?
LeFloid”, or Florian Diedrich as his real name is, founded his channel on 14 October 2007. This makes him clearly one of the veterans of German YouTube history. He released his first video, as of today, on October 31, 2010. If you take a look at his old videos, it quickly becomes clear that they are very different from his content today. The videos of the time were mainly for entertainment rather than education and information. After some time a form of videos developed, which served this purpose. This eventually developed into the “LeNews” format, which still exists today, and with which he was able to achieve a high degree of fame. In it, the now 31 year old informs about current and especially political events in Germany and the world. Without thinking much about it, you could equate this format with the traditional news available on television. However, this would be simply wrong because entertainment is clearly the main focus of “LeFloid”. Although his viewers are to be informed about political events, they are also to be entertained at the same time. This format continues to this day and is what makes the 31 year old’s channel stand out and what most of his viewers know him for.

Besides his main channel “LeFloid”, Florian also runs two other channels called “FlipFloid” and “DoktorFroid”. His channel “FlipFloid” is mainly about vlogs and several real life projects. He founded the channel “DoktorFroid” on 29 December 2012 together with his friend and colleague Max Krüger. On this one, the content revolves around gaming, which is another passion for Serviceh of them. All three channels are under the control and management of Studio 71, a network owned by Prosieben and Sat 1.

One of the highlights of his career was his interview with the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 11 July 2015. In this he confronted her with several questions of his quite young community which they could ask him in advance via the hashtag #NetzFragtMerkel. This interview was then already published on 13 July 2015 on his channel LeFloid and found quite quickly great response. Despite all the enthusiasm, he and especially Mrs. Angela Merkel had to deal with quite a lot of criticism. The reason for this was on the one hand the interview style of the 31 year old, which is “too dear” for many people, and on the other hand the importance of YouTube for politics. All in all, this interview was more than informative although quite a few of his fans would have liked a much more persistent interview style.

If you take a look at the channel “LeFloid” today, you will notice that he already has over three million subscribers who follow his regular videos, as well as the quite varied content. For some time now, Florian has been publishing another regular format on his main channel called “Copy&Taste”. In it, he devotes himself to another personal passion besides political events, namely cooking. The main content of the format is to copy conventional fast food dishes in a better form and then also to taste them.

Also in the live streaming area it is not to be thought away. In 2014 he started together with several colleagues a livestream called “Loot for the world” which was a charity livestream. All proceeds were donated for a good cause. In the meantime, this event has already been successfully repeated four times.

It remains to be said that his main focus is clearly on informing young people, but he does not forget his own interests.
