A few years ago, nobody in the German YouTube scene would have thought that a channel of a law firm, which mainly publishes videos about legal basics, would inspire the masses. Nevertheless, in the past years, especially the channel “Kanzlei WBS” managed to reach a lot of viewers with their videos and topics oriented to the youth, thus expanding and inspiring the viewership.

Generally speaking, the channel “Kanzlei WBS” is the YouTube channel of the law firm WBS from Cologne with the same name. Loosely translated, the name includes the channel and the law firm of the same name, Wilde Beuger Solmecke Rechtsanwälte. However, only one of these three people is the main face and figurehead of the channel. This is namely Christian Solmecke.

Christian Solmecke was born on 13 November 1973 in Hagen and is thus already 47 years old. He himself is a German lawyer, author and web video producer. Furthermore, Christan Solmecke is one of the co-founders of the German Institute for Communication and Law on the Internet (DIKRI). He is also one of the board members of the News Enlightenment Initiative in Law.

The channel “Kanzlei WBS” was founded very early on 23 July 2010. The first video on it appeared only a few weeks later on 10 August 2010 and was entitled: “Amazon, Ebay und Co. – Der Kauf im Internet – Kanzlei Wilde Beuger & Solmecke Köln” and represents a so-called legal video. From the very beginning, the channel’s focus was primarily on answering legal questions on topics of interest to young people and “younger” viewers and enlightening them with knowledge. From the very beginning of the “Kanzlei WBS” channel, Christian Solmecke was the face of the channel and answered legal questions in various areas in video form.

The channel, and above all Christian Solmecke himself, gained a great deal of publicity during the debate about Article 13, which is still very controversial for many people, and the strongly fanned debate about it.

If you take a look at the channel “Kanzlei WBS” today, you will first notice that Christian Solmecke is still the face and figurehead of the channel and thus also of the law firm itself. Furthermore, four videos appear today, slightly different in categories. On Wednesdays, the video “Challenge WBS” appears, in which they answer legal questions in various areas and often entangled situations, on Fridays, the format “May I?” appears, in which specific viewer questions on certain legal issues are answered, on Saturdays, the format “Legal Errors” appears, in which, as the name suggests, famous legal errors of many people are clarified and on Sundays, the format “User Questions” appears, in which all user questions towards the law firm and Solmecke himself are answered. These formats and the associated upload schedule can be found in the channel banner and tracked in the channel’s video history. As a result, awareness and interest in the channel and the topics it covers has grown tremendously, reaching well over 563,000 subscribers to date. As the channel calls itself, which can also be seen from the channel banner, this is Europe’s largest right-wing channel.
