Almost every German rap and/or hip-hop enthusiast will have searched for more information about his or her favorite artists, interviews or documentaries. During this search, one inevitably comes across the YouTube channel “BACKSPIN”, which meanwhile inspires and captivates numerous people. Nevertheless, probably few know where this channel actually comes from, what the origins of it are or who is actually behind this YouTube channel.

Generally speaking, “BACKSPIN” is a German hip hop and rap youth channel on YouTube. This YouTube channel belongs to the Hip Hop magazine of the same name, which was first published in the summer of 1994. This magazine belongs to the publishing house “BACKSPIN MEDIA” which publishes the “BACKSPIN Magazine” four times a year. In the meantime, however, numerous other media have been formed over the years, through which “BACKSPIN” publishes its content. This now includes a YouTube channel, formerly called “BACKSPIN TV”, an online radio format called “BACKSPIN FM” and the “BACKSPIN PODCAST”. All media have the task of reporting about the youth culture Hip Hop and the genre Rap. The owner of “BACKSPIN” is Niko Hüls, who is better known on YouTube and in the scene as “Niko Backspin”. This can also be seen and represented in several formats of the channel.

The channel “BACKSPIN” was already founded on April 20, 2009. The first video on this channel was also released on the same day and was titled: “BACKSPIN TV #01 – KOLLEGAH (Interview)”. This video showed an interview with German rapper “Kollegah” conducted by “BACKSPIN”. Interviews of this kind were often published in the early days of the channel. In addition, other formats such as reports with and about individual artists or groups were published over the course of time.

Besides the moderator and owner “Niko Backspin”, several other moderators are involved and represented in the videos of the channel.

In the course of time, the YouTube channel “BACKSPIN” managed to grow strongly. This was possible mainly because there has been a very great interest in the genre of hip hop and rap for a very long time. In the past years this expanded more and more in the German language area and the Deutschrap could establish itself. Furthermore, the interest of listeners in the various artists has also increased greatly in recent years. If you look at the channel “BACKSPIN” today, you will see that it is still very active. Every week several new videos appear on this channel, which all revolve around the genre of hip hop and rap. In the meantime, the channel also has well over 267,000 subscribers, making it one of the most successful German channels in this genre.
